The brand-new crossover for the Korean manufacturer is about to receive an all-electric version, which will most likely come as 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric SUV for the North American market. As you probably know, the company presented a completely new small crossover this summer. It will hit the market in next few weeks. Soon after the premiere, the company started to work on the electric version.
This model is expected to come as 2018 year model in Korea and as 2019 Kona Electric SUV in North America and some other parts of the world. Compared to the gasoline version, this model will come with a different, electrified powertrain. On the other side, rest of the car will remain pretty much the same. Of course, there will be some smaller tweaks, but the core of design will remain the same. It should come somewhere in the second half of next year.
2019 Hyundai Kona Electric SUV design
The 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric SUV will be the newest version of the recently-presented 2018 Hyundai Kona. It will share most of characteristics with its gasoline relative. When it comes to base design characteristics, both models will ride on the same architecture. Moreover, these two models will share completely the same shape. Even the design language will be the same, although 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric SUV will feature several unique details. In order to point up its electric character, it will feature a unique grille design, as well as unique alloy wheels. Rest of the exterior design will remain pretty much the same.
The same thing is expected inside. We will see the same interior design, although there will be some unique details. Most of them will be on the instrument cluster and center console, adapted for the electric powertrain.
2019 Hyundai Kona Electric SUV features
When it comes to standard features, we expect to see 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric SUV fully-load. Although this is a subcompact crossover, it will come with even some premium features and technologies. Compared to the gasoline models, it will probably feature a similar list of standard features as Limited trim, but without leather upholstery. So, expect standard features like LED headlights, automatic climate control, a sunroof, 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, smartphone integration etc.
Also, we will see various safety features, such as blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, forward collision mitigation system, lane keeping assist, a driver attention alert system, a head-up display.
2019 Hyundai Kona Electric SUV powertrain
This will be the main difference compared to standard gasoline model. The 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric SUV will come with a new electric powertrain. We expect to see a similar system as in Ionic EV. This means a 120-hp electric motor paired with a large battery pack. However, we expect to see a much bigger capacity.
According to some predictions, the new battery will have a capacity somewhere between 39 and 64 kWh, which is much more compared to Ioniq’s 28. So, we could also expect a much better range. The current Ioniq EV is good for about 125 miles, the new crossover should go over 220 miles, according to some reports.
