North America is still the most important car market in the world, so it is no wonder that all major carmakers put their focus on this part of the world. Also, the U.S. market holds the leading position when it comes to alternative sources of power. Many companies that work on electric, hybrid and fuel cell cars are settled here. As one of the world’s largest car manufacturers, VW definitely won’t be an exception.
This manufacturer started with several big projects in terms of electrified cars. There is an I.D. Crozz Concept that had its premiere recently, which should have its launch in about two years. According to the latest reports, its production will be set in the United States.
The new I.D. Crozz and future electric cars will be produced in the U.S.
Although we didn’t hear an official confirmation, it is pretty much for sure that the final version of the recent concept will be produced in the United States. At the ongoing car show in LA, we heard many statements that indicate production of the new model will start in North America. VW is one of the world’s leading manufacturers, although it isn’t among best-selling companies in this part of the world. Electric cars will definitely be a great move that will provide a better market position, especially is we consider that huge amount of electric cars is sold here in the United States. For this occasion, we will see the new I.D. Crozz, but many future models should take production here too. The local production brings many benefits in terms of more competitive price, low costs of transport, short delivery times etc.
There are two factories-candidates at the moment
At the moment, there are two VW factories that are in the game for the production of new electric cars. It is on the company’s management to make a final decision. There few main issues about this decision, but the most important thing is about capacity potentials. At the moment there are two assemblies in the game. The first one is a factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee. However, it is also possible to see new models coming out form the facility in Puebla, Mexico. However, we are still waiting for the official confirmation, since Hinrich Woebcken said that they are looking into this most likely option of industrialization in the United States. (But) nothing has been finalized yet.
On the other side, executive vice president and chief engineering officer for the North American region, Matthias Erb, said that they are fighting to get production here and that, obviously, there would be more potential in terms of delivery times from the factory and so on. I think we can make it happen.
The I.D. Crozz will be the first one to come
Most likely, the first model that will take production in North America will be the new I.D. Crozz, We just saw a presentation of the concept recently and the great thing is that it already comes with most of the specification. Besides attractive design, this concept features a new electric powertrain. It is a system that combines two electric motors with a total output of 302 horsepower. These electric motors come together with an 83-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which has enough capacity for a 300-mile range. Also, there is a fast charging option, which tops up the battery to 80 percent in about 30 minutes.
Besides this model, production of the original I.D. hatchback should take the same place. We should find out more details in next months when we expect to get an official confirmation of the U.S. production.
